Lee Van Cleef stars as Jonathan Corbett, a Texas lawman who is known throughout the country as one of the best. He is fast with his draw, deadly with his aim and can track down a bandit across the country. He is growing older now and contemplates retirement and possible employment by a wealthy land baron. But then he is informed that a crazed Mexican bandit named Cuchillo “the knife” has just raped and killed a teenage girl.
Encouraged by the rich baron, Corbett sets off to bring in this savage killer but discovers that Cuchillo is as slippery as a worm and to catch him is one thing - to keep him is another. Eventually Corbett snares his man but begins to wonder if Cuchillo is truly capable of the crime he is charged with. He discovers why the land baron so badly desires this Mexican dead.
An amazing example of the Italian western genre that includes all the prerequisite elements; a great score by Ennio Morricone, beautiful widescreen photography, and a political and moral message.
Generally regarded as one of the all-time best Italian westerns. When released in the US this 105 minute version was chopped to 85 minutes. |
