The Slave tells the story of a beautiful young concubine chosen by the Czar. He desperately desires her but is frustrated by her lack of emotion. She will agree to love him if he proves she is not a slave. For one day the two change roles as the Czar becomes a slave and is humiliated by this young beauty. When the day ends she tastes his revenge. In Zooerastia an unfaithful wife discovered by her vengeful husband is forced to live in a prison with wild beasts. She is driven mad and becomes a beast herself. The Whipping; a young boy in a very strict Catholic school must endure physical punishments from his teachers. He is also beaten after accidentally witnessing his mother with a strange man. This punishment triggers a strange awakening. For him gratification can only come with pain. The Promise; A beautiful young girl is forced by her dominating mother to wed a wealthy man she has no feelings for. Her handsome cousin, who she has not seen in years, arrives for the ceremony. The two decide to act upon the feelings they only talked about as children.
Similar to the films from French director Walerian Borowczyk, this rarity is completely rewarding and continues a tradition of historical stories that the Italians are so well know for. Beautifully photographed, and starring some of Italy’s most lovely actresses: Lizbeth Hummel who is best known for her role in Borowczyk’s LA BETE (1975) and Brigitte Petronio who would go on to appear in Ruggero Deodato’s sadistic HOUSE BY THE EDGE OF THE PARK (1980). Written, directed and edited by Luigi Rosso whose experience as a cinematographer ensured that the photography captured the dream-like feeling he sought. |
