In 1943, 25,000 Yugoslav partisans are trapped in the River Neretva valley by combined German and Italian forces plus the armies of domestic collaborators. They are outnumbered six to one. Only a single bridge remains across the icy river and enemy brigades await them on the other side. The commander of the joint German and Italian forces prepares to crush the partisans at the bridgehead. Determined to slow the pursuit of Panzer divisions, the partisan, Vlado [Yul Brynner], is ordered by Tito’s supreme command to blow up the bridge.
On learning of the bridge’s destruction, the Germans suspect a trick, thus easing the pressure on the groups massed at the bridge. The partisans hastily build a footbridge over the wreckage and succeed in crossing the river before the enemy planes discover the ruse. They regroup on the opposite bank and move out to engage the enemy cavalry amassed for the attack. |
